The Unnameable?

Have you noticed people who seem to pronounce their names differently every time they say them? Currently, they are mostly millennials. I dealt with a Kiley/Calley/Kileen situation. I dealt with a Achiote/Selente/Selwanna.* I dealt with a name that sounded like a cat coughing up a furball. All of these people are American born. The co-workers of the Achiote cluster cannot pronounce her name either. My phone connection might be responsible for part of these problems, but not all of them.

There was an episode of the 80’s TV show Taxi about this. Judd Hirsch’s character was dealing with an aspiring actress called Nina/Nine-a.

*Names may have been fictionalized to protect privacy, but the original names were that weird.
