Some brands I find in the supermarket have MSG in them, although they may claim otherwise. Those were probably Lee Kum Kee and Dynasty brands.
Online I found Chinese sauces by Roland Foods which they say have no MSG. Roland sells black bean sauce, Hoisin sauce, sweet and sour sauce, plum sauce, oyster flavor sauce, chili garlic sauce, sweet chili sauce and more. I haven’t tried them yet. They may be importing them from different manufacturers in different countries. If you try one and determine it doesn’t have hidden MSG in it, that doesn’t guarantee the others don’t.
Roland Foods has been in business since the 1920’s and seems quite impressive. They sell a dizzying variety of foods from many places.
Below are the ingredients they say are in their Chinese sauces. Unless otherwise noted this, info is from the Roland Foods website, or Walmart.

Where do you buy these products as a retail consumer? I haven’t purchased them, but I’ve seen them on Amazon, MexGrocer and at the Walmart website. Some of the 3rd party merchants that sell thru Walmart’s website are shady and you don’t want them to have your contact info. Roland Foods itself seems like it wouldn’t normally sell directly to retail consumers, although I didn’t check. If you are a store or restaurant that is interested in their products, I’d certainly contact them.
Some other Chinese sauce brands I’m investigating are Amoy and Kikkoman.
Here’s what Kikkoman says is in their black bean sauce:
Kikkoman Restaurant Series Black Bean Sauce, with Garlic
Ingredients: Water, Fermented Black Soybeans (Black Soybeans, Water, Salt, Alcohol, Oat Fiber), Garlic, Sugar, Naturally Brewed Soy Sauce (Water, Wheat, Soybeans, Salt), Salt, Vinegar, Citric Acid, Fermented Wheat Protein, Ginger, Spice, Xanthan Gum.
from Publix website. It doesn’t say no MSG but their soy sauce doesn’t seem to have it.
Do you have any suggestions?
